On September 29, 2018, at the Missouri School Boards’ Association Annual Conference, Robert A. Useted  and Erin M. Leach gave a presentation titled, “#1st Amendment #March for _____# fill in the blank” concerning school speech in a time of protests. They discussed the rights of the students, staff, and board members on one hand, and the obligations of school districts to protect their students; to keep their schools functioning efficiently; and the need to be viewpoint neutral regarding the content of the protesters’ message. Also discussed were multiple protest situations across the United States, the social media aspects involved in protests, and the applicable law governing school protest situations. Robert A. Useted and Erin M. Leach, together with Julie Hahn of Ritenour School District also gave another presentation the same day titled, “School Violence and Students’ Red Flags.”  They discussed procedures to follow in the event of a threat of violence; guidance regarding what information can be shared, and with whom; and resources for getting children the help they need.
